About
Its 1997 and spring time . Im a 8 year old boy living in south east London, doing everything a young kid would do back then, school, playing out, playing videogames etc but sometimes after school i would turn on my parents vinyl player and play the "Arrested Development" album. The fascination of a record spinning with a stylus floating in ambience had me mesmerised but at the time didn't fully engage that it was the first key into a DJ's instrument.
I would visit me cousin here and there who lived in west London...this is where i first encountered my exposure to UK Garage....
Its 1998/1999 were playing hours of Playstation, multiple rounds on Tekken 2, multiple races of Gran Turismo. While i load the next game, he reaches into his CD collection and pulls out a orange case with the writings " PURE GARAGE 2 " pops it in his 3 disc CD changer hifi and i kid you not. I was blown away buy the variety of tunes blessing my young ears. I asked my cousin " yo what is this " He said " Garage bro "
Now ive been listening to Dance Albums a few years as my mum worked at a library and would get the latest CD's . Usually its your typical fade in fade out transition into the next track during the mix. However on this Pure Garage CD the mixing was technical, unique and could hear effects being used. While my cousin is downstairs getting something to eat. I look at the case and lock onto the top, It reads " Mixed Live By DJ EZ "
Hearing numerous tracks being uniquely transitioned into the next i ask my cousin who this guy was, he explained " He's the don bro, Guy knows how to mix " From then on i was hyper focused on Garage now. It was EVERYWHERE around this time as it became commercial. Numerous exposure to 2step,Garage House,4x4,Breakbeat kept me on the edge. One minute i would be listening to Mj Cole's " Sincere " then it could be Todd Edwards " Your the one " Things were looking unstoppable for the genre......
Its 2006, Im in Northampton now and unfortunately garage mania had died down from 1999 to 2003 and grime filled the void left before it . Im about 17 around this time. I come a across a mate who i knew from a ex and we get talking about Djing Garage and Bassline which was just about to make a impact on the club scene. He organises a night and a bar in the town centre and asks me to DJ with him and one another (House DJ)
This was my moment to shine, I had a slot to play Garage and had free reign on what type of garage to play. This was on the first versions of Serato and was used with 1210s. As i had belt driven Numarks at the time. I had to get the practice in, so i djed at his birthday and a few sessions at the local community centre. My mixing wasn't the best but i was kinda ready lol
The night is here and its my turn to DJ. Tunes were on point, Mixing not so much but had a absolute blast. From there on i got sucked into other genres (Dubstep and Future Garage) Djing here and there i soon established myself
I returned to UK Garage in 2020 during the lockdown.I was taken back by DJ EZ's 24 hour mix for a mental health charity. It once again reignited my passion for Djing and in particular Garage music. Started music shopping, Invested in a newer setup and never looked back. I found love in it again, artists like Highrise,Dem 2, Stixy D, Para, DJ Perception instilled the belief that Garage was popping again. Through this newfound belief i invested in my Youtube channel, Soundcloud, Mixcloud and numerous online radio stations. This was Djed alongside other genres of Atmospheric DnB and 140 Dubstep(Crukren) but the simple fact was UK Garage was back on the scene for me.
In the present, Ive had a few gigs in and around London thanks to Marky D(Promotor) A current radio slot on Sub FM (3-5pm) and a platform where i upload the latest and oldest UK Garage tunes. Its been a blessing to find a passion in music and here's to many more years doing what i love.
